A 2012 study found that eating fresh blueberries once a week can slow cognitive decline. Another 2013 study in lab mice found that blueberries can protect the brain by removing toxic proteins that build up. But that’s not all! You can grow your own blueberries. How amazing is that? We’ve got 6 easy steps to help you grow blueberries in your own garden.

Choose the Right Planting Site and Prepare the Soil
Blueberry bushes love sun and good drainage. Keep the soil loose and weed-free. Water the blueberries well, as they grow best when they have constant access to moisture. So make sure you have plenty of water on hand. Poorly or partially drained soil won’t produce the desired results. Try raised beds. If you don’t have a garden or live in a small apartment, patio planters can be a great solution.
Give the blueberry bush enough space, preferably two and a half feet in diameter and one foot deep for each bush. Dig a suitable hole and remove about half of the soil. Add an equal amount of pre-moistened peat moss. Mix well.
If you are planting the bushes in raised beds, use equal amounts of peat moss and bark, sawdust or potting mix. Avoid cedar bark and redwood.
