Apple mint, or what is scientifically known as Mentha Suaveolens, also called pineapple mint, woolly mint or round-leaved mint. Apple mint belongs to the Lamiaceae family, which also includes many other important aromatic culinary herbs, such as basil, rosemary, sage, oregano and catnip.
What is the origin of the apple mint plant?
Perennial plant belongs to the genus Mint. The intentions originate in southern and western Europe, including the Mediterranean region. It was also cultivated in the central and northern parts of continental Europe. Its names in these areas include apple mint, pineapple mint, round-leaved mint, large-leaved mint, horse mint, and woolen mint.
The genus comes from Minthe or Menthe, a watery mermaid in ancient Greek mythology. Apple mint is characterized by its sweet smell, and its leaves and stems are covered with fine hairs. Hence the name woolen mint (wool). If you want to grow apple mint, plant it next to cabbage, peas, tomatoes and broccoli to improve their taste.
