2. Prepare the Squash
Rinse the yellow squashes under cold water to remove any dirt or residue. Pat them dry with a paper towel. Slice the squashes into approximately ¼-inch rounds. Consistent slicing ensures even cooking and a uniform texture.
3. Season the Squash
Place the sliced squash in a large mixing bowl. Season generously with garlic salt and freshly ground black pepper. Toss the slices well so that each piece is coated with the seasoning. This step is crucial as it infuses the squash with flavor.
4. Arrange the Squash
Arrange the seasoned squash slices in a single layer on a baking sheet or in a baking dish. If you are using a baking dish, lightly grease it with a small amount of oil or non-stick spray to prevent sticking. Spacing the slices apart helps them cook evenly and develop a nice, crispy texture.
5. Add the Parmesan Topping
Sprinkle ½ cup of freshly grated Parmesan cheese evenly over the top of the squash slices. The cheese will melt and become golden and crispy, creating a deliciously cheesy crust. For best results, use freshly grated Parmesan rather than pre-grated cheese, as it melts better and provides a richer flavor.
6. Bake the Squash
Place the baking sheet or dish in the preheated oven. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the squash is tender and the Parmesan cheese has melted and turned a golden brown. You can check for doneness by inserting a fork into the squash; it should be easily pierced.
