Where do these dark stains on your walls come from? (It’s not just dirt)
A wall turning black, especially in corners, is usually not just a matter of poor cleaning. In most cases, excessive humidity is the main culprit.
In poorly ventilated spaces—like a bathroom with lingering steam, a kitchen without proper airflow, or a bedroom rarely opened—the moisture-laden air cannot escape. It ends up condensing on cold surfaces, creating an ideal environment for mold growth.
External infiltration can also cause problems. A faulty gutter, damaged roof, permeable walls, or rising damp from foundations—all these factors can lead to these unsightly marks.
Sometimes the issue is insulation. A “thermal bridge” (an area where temperature differences between inside and outside are high) can cause a cold spot favorable to condensation.
One often overlooked detail: furniture placed too close to walls. Without air circulation space, humidity accumulates and microscopic fungi quietly grow behind your wardrobes or sofas.

Immediate actions to stop the spread
At the first sign of a suspicious stain, act quickly. The sooner you react, the less damage you will have.
Start by airing out the room thoroughly, morning and evening, whatever the outside temperature. Ten minutes is enough to renew the air and remove excess moisture. This is especially important in humid areas like bathrooms or laundry rooms.
Next, tackle the stains. A mixture of warm water and white vinegar is often very effective. For tougher stains, hydrogen peroxide can give good results. Be cautious though: vinegar should not be used on natural stone or marble surfaces, as it can damage them.
