Instructions:

  1. Bake the Brownies:
    • Preheat your oven according to the brownie mix package directions (usually 325-350°F / 160-175°C).
    • Prepare the brownie batter as directed on the box instructions.
    • Pour the batter into a greased 9×13-inch baking pan.
    • Bake for the minimum time recommended for fudgy brownies, or slightly less than the full time (e.g., if the range is 28-32 minutes, bake for 25-28 minutes). You want them to be set but still very moist and slightly gooey, as they will absorb moisture from the other layers.
    • Once baked, remove the brownies from the oven and let them cool completely in the pan on a wire rack. This is crucial before assembling the trifle. Once cooled, cut the brownies into 1-inch to 1.5-inch cubes.
  2. Prepare the Peanut Butter Layer:
    • In a large mixing bowl, using an electric mixer, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth and creamy, about 1-2 minutes.
    • Add the creamy peanut butter to the bowl and beat until well combined with the cream cheese, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed.
    • Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar, beating on low speed until incorporated, then increase speed to medium and beat until light and fluffy.
    • Slowly add the milk and vanilla extract, continuing to beat until the mixture is smooth and lump-free. The consistency should be thick but spreadable. If it’s too thick, add milk 1 tablespoon at a time until desired consistency is reached. Set aside.
  3. Prepare the Whipped Cream Layer:
    • In a separate, very cold large mixing bowl (you can chill the bowl and whisk attachment in the freezer for 10-15 minutes beforehand for best results), pour the cold heavy whipping cream.
    • Using an electric mixer on medium-high speed, beat the cream until soft peaks form.
    • Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar and vanilla extract, continuing to beat until stiff peaks form. Be careful not to overbeat, or it will turn into butter.
  4. Assemble the Trifle:
    • Choose a large, clear glass trifle bowl (at least 3-4 quarts / liters in capacity) for best presentation.
    • First Layer (Brownie): Place about half of the brownie cubes in an even layer at the bottom of the trifle bowl. Gently press them down slightly to form a solid base.
    • Second Layer (Peanut Butter): Carefully spread about half of the peanut butter mixture evenly over the brownie layer. Use an offset spatula or the back of a spoon to spread it out smoothly to the edges.
    • Third Layer (Caramel/Fudge Drizzle): Drizzle about half of the warmed caramel sauce and half of the warmed hot fudge sauce over the peanut butter layer.
    • Fourth Layer (Whipped Cream): Gently spread about one-third of the whipped cream evenly over the caramel and fudge drizzles.
    • Repeat Layers: Repeat the brownie layer (using the remaining half of the cubes), followed by the remaining half of the peanut butter mixture, another drizzle of caramel and hot fudge, and another one-third of the whipped cream.
    • Final Layer (Whipped Cream & Topping): Top the trifle with the remaining one-third of the whipped cream, creating a slightly mounded, beautiful top.
    • Garnish: Generously sprinkle the chopped peanut butter cups (or other chosen candy/toffee bits) over the entire top of the trifle. Drizzle any remaining caramel sauce over the top for a decorative finish.
  5. Chill: Cover the trifle loosely with plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least 4-6 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld and the layers to set. Chilling also allows the brownies to absorb moisture from the other layers, making them even more moist and delicious.
  6. Serve: When ready to serve, simply scoop portions of the trifle into individual dessert bowls, ensuring each serving gets a bit of every delicious layer. Enjoy this truly heavenly dessert!
