Soda

In conversation with NY Post, Levine remarked that many soda cans are ‘harmful’ to our health.

“Let’s keep it straightforward: a can of soda contains 10 teaspoons of sugar or the equivalent amount of corn syrup,” he stated, which elevates triglycerides, poses a risk of weight gain, raises blood sugar levels, and heightens the likelihood of diabetes—all of which threaten heart health.

He urged everyone to visualize consuming 1/5 of a cup of pure corn syrup when opening a carbonated can of soda, ‘because that’s what you’re doing each time.’

“It’s garbage,” he added in his viral TikTok video.

Frappuccino

Levine’s preferred drink has made it into the top four worst offenders as the doctor confessed a grande iced frappuccino ‘used to be my favorite’—until he ‘realized’ its disastrous effects.

“I truly experienced a high from this drink and then crashed within two hours,” he elaborated, discussing how numerous iced coffee beverages, made with coffee or cream bases and flavored syrups, contain nearly 100mg of caffeine and 51 grams of sugar—the equivalent of almost 13 teaspoons of sugar.

Levine stated: “[It]’s potentially harmful stress on the heart for anyone with heart disease to consume these mixtures of caffeine and sugar and a perfect storm to trigger palpitations.”

Alcohol

The doctor commented that alcohol can be safe, ‘if you consume one or fewer drinks daily and have no heart issues.’

However, he refuted the common belief that ‘a few drinks of wine daily keeps the doctor away,’ as heart risk escalates among those with existing conditions or individuals who increase their alcohol consumption.

“There’s nothing heart-healthy about it, and all those studies—most backed by the alcohol or wine industry—were likely flawed observational studies, showing an association with better outcomes but not causation,” he explained. “In simple terms: individuals who drank a glass of wine may have been more athletic or possessed some other unaccounted benefit.”

The doctor stated this is due to alcohol ‘raising blood pressure, triglycerides, atrial fibrillation, and—in higher amounts—is a direct toxin to the heart, to the extent we have a term in cardiology—alcohol cardiomyopathy.’

This heart condition arises specifically from chronic heavy alcohol consumption, which can be fatal.

“Alcohol is off-limits,” he stated in his TikTok video.

Energy drinks

The cardiologist included energy drinks on his list of top four offenders in the beverage sector, owing to their harmful combination of caffeine and sugar.

“Beverages like Red Bull have approximately 1.5 times more caffeine than coffee but also include nearly eight teaspoons or more of sugar—or worse, corn syrup,” Levine added. “The Monster energy drink contains nearly 15 teaspoons of sugar.”
