Sponge Recycling: Step by Step
Preparing and Disinfecting Used Sponges
Here’s how:
Washing and Disinfecting:
Wash the sponge in hot water: this will help remove any remaining dirt and food particles.
Disinfect it with vinegar or baking soda:
Vinegar: Fill a container with vinegar and let the sponge soak for 24 hours. Baking soda: Mix baking soda and water to make a solution and let the sponge soak for 24 hours.
Alternative: You can also disinfect the sponge with bleach, but vinegar and baking soda are more environmentally friendly.
Cutting:
Squeeze the sponge to remove any accumulated water. After disinfecting, make sure it is completely dry.
Using scissors, cut small pieces of sponge; they should be small enough to blend easily into the soil.
Follow the steps below to prepare used sponges and reuse them efficiently and environmentally in your garden.
Mix the sponge pieces with the soil.
Then, follow these steps:Prepare the mixture:
In the bag:
Place the desired amount of soil in a large bag or container.
Mix everything:
Insert the cut sponge pieces into the soil. Mix well to ensure even distribution of the sponges throughout the soil. For use in pots:
Add soil:
Place a layer of soil at the bottom of the pot.
Add a layer of your new mix:
Add a layer of potting soil and sponge to the first layer of potting soil.
Repeat this process as many times as necessary, alternating layers of potting soil and mix.
This process maximizes the benefits of the sponges in the soil by improving moisture retention and aeration, while providing a healthy environment for plant roots.
