The Closely Guarded Secret of Garlic and Vinegar
In the family of grandmother’s tricks, we ask… garlic and white vinegar! These two ingredients, well known in our kitchens, also have very interesting repellent properties. Garlic gives off sulfur compounds that insects hate, and vinegar disturbs their sense of smell. Together, they form a deterrent duo, harmless to you but very disturbing to them.
The recipe for homemade spray in 4 steps
You don’t have to be a DIY pro. Follow these simple steps:
The ingredients:
1 head of garlic, 1 glass of white vinegar (about 200 ml), 2 glasses of water (about 400 ml), and a clean spray bottle.
Preparation of the garlic:
Peel 4 to 5 pods, crush them lightly to release their aromas.
Infusion: Boil the water, add the garlic, let it infuse for 10 minutes. Once cooled, strain and add the vinegar.
Spraying: Pour everything into your bottle, shake gently… Your natural repellent is ready.
Bonus tip: store the rest in the fridge and use it within a week.

Where and how to use it for efficiency
To make this spray really useful, apply it:
Around windows, doors, sills and cracks – the preferred entry points for insects.
Close to sinks, garbage cans, worktops – where they like to hang out.
Every two to three days, or just after cleaning. In case of an invasion, use it daily for a few days.
Remember to ventilate the room well during application: the smell of garlic fades quickly… but insects remember it.
Bonus: the right things to do on a daily basis
A spray is useful, but daily hygiene is essential. Here are some simple reflexes:
Clean up crumbs and splatters as soon as they appear.
Seal cracks or small holes with putty or a suitable joint.
Store food in airtight containers.
Place bay leaves or cucumber slices in the corners: some insects can’t stand the smell.
