In a statement posted to X, Harris wrote, “I have been briefed on reports of gunshots fired near former President Trump and his property in Florida, and I am glad he is safe. Violence has no place in America.”
President Joe Biden has also reportedly been briefed on the incident.
Trump’s campaign said Sunday afternoon that the former president was safe “following gunshots in his vicinity.” His communications director, Steven Cheung, did not provide any additional details at the time.
U.S. Secret Service agents opened fire after seeing a person with a firearm near Trump’s golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida, while the Republican presidential candidate was golfing Sunday, two law enforcement officials told The Associated Press. No injuries were reported.
The person fled in an SUV and was later apprehended in nearby Martin County by local law enforcement, the officials said. In a Facebook post, the Martin County Sheriff’s Office said it has stopped a vehicle on northbound Interstate 95 and taken a suspect into custody who is believed to be connected to the shooting.
