Be careful with mouse poison
Another option that is sometimes used is poisoning the mice. However, this is an animal-unfriendly option and should therefore only be seen as a last resort. It is good to know that mouse poison will no longer be sold to private individuals from 2023. Another reason to avoid poison is that these pesticides will also end up with other, desirable animals in the food chain.
Furthermore, mouse poison can be very dangerous for pets, livestock and children. Therefore, do not start working with pesticides yourself, but leave this to a certified expert. You can find this via the municipality or via the trade association NVPB .

Rats are causing a nuisance in more and more cities.
Rat plague is lurking
According to the Knowledge and Advice Centre for Animal Pests (KAD), we not only have to watch out for mice, but a rat plague is also lurking. “In 2023, the use of poison for animals by private individuals will be banned. But there are no good alternatives yet,” warns Bastiaan Meerburg of the KAD in the NOS Radio 1 Journal . However, the problem does not only lie with the upcoming ban on poison. In a city park in Nijmegen, for example, it is discouraged to feed the ducks, because the bread that the ducks are given also increasingly attracts rats. To counter this, the RIVM will publish an evaluation at the end of 2019 that will look at rat control by municipalities in the Netherlands.
