Step 3: Planting Time
Now, it’s time to plant those precious potatoes! Begin by acquiring seed potatoes from a reputable source or use sprouted potatoes from your kitchen. Cut larger seed potatoes into 2-inch pieces, ensuring each piece has at least one “eye” or sprout. Place the seed potatoes, eyes facing upward, on top of the soil, and cover them with 3-4 inches of soil. Remember to space them apart to allow proper growth and prevent crowding.
Step 4: Water and Care
Potatoes need consistent moisture throughout their growing season. Water your planter regularly, ensuring the soil remains evenly moist but not waterlogged. As the plants grow, you can gradually mound additional soil around the stems, leaving only a few leaves exposed. This technique, called hilling, encourages more potatoes to form along the buried stems.
Step 5: Harvest and Enjoy!
Around 70-90 days after planting, your potatoes should be ready for harvesting. Gently dig around the plants with your hands or a small garden fork, being careful not to damage the tubers. Collect the fresh, plump potatoes and savor the satisfaction of your homegrown harvest! Store them in a cool, dark place for maximum shelf life, and remember to share the bounty with friends and family.
