6Bandage the cut [6]. Put a bandage on the cut to keep the cream or ointment in place and protect it from further damage. If it is just a small cut or scrape that can easily heal on its own, you may not want to cover it with a bandage. However, if you are in doubt, avoid regretting it later by putting a bandage on for added safety and faster healing. Change the bandage every 24 hours.
- If the wound seems too large to be covered with a bandage, find a larger bandage or see a doctor to dress it. Use a compress and rolled gauze.

7Think about your last tetanus vaccination [7]. The risk of getting tetanus is higher if you have a puncture wound or if there are foreign objects in the wound. A small cut or scrape is often nothing to worry about. However, if you have any doubts, consult a healthcare professional immediately to find out whether or not you should get a tetanus shot. If you have been vaccinated within the last 10 years, nothing will happen to you since the shot remains effective for 10 years.

Get stitches. When examining a cut, it is essential to check whether the edges are able to stick together perfectly. For a small cut or scrape, there is no need to worry. However, if you have an open wound and it is difficult to bring the edges of the wound together, see a doctor immediately so that he or she can give you stitches. The advantage of stitches is that they hold the edges of the wound in an optimal position to promote healing. Also, the sooner you get stitches, the better, as getting them as soon as possible (if necessary) will reduce scarring and promote healing.

2Be on the lookout for signs of infection [8] . These include redness and warmth around the cut, significant swelling, pus discharge from the wound area, or fever. See your doctor right away if you suspect your cut is infected.
-
Know when to see a doctor. If the cut is so severe that tendons or ligaments, muscles, nerves, blood vessels, or bones can be seen, you should definitely seek medical attention urgently, as such injuries are deep and require medical intervention [9] . Also, if you do not stop bleeding or have numbness, tingling, or a complete or partial loss of sensation, go to the emergency room immediately. All of these symptoms indicate that the injury is very serious and requires professional care and intervention.
- If an animal bites you, consult your doctor immediately.
- Also see your doctor if you have a puncture wound after stepping on a nail or other foreign body.
- In both situations it is necessary to prevent any infectious disease.
