What Jen wanted to know next caught me off guard. “Your son ought to have clarified where the test was going to be held.” Upon realizing that Ryan had omitted any pertinent information, an unpleasant sensation began to take hold of me. As Jen confessed, everything started to fall into place in the most unsettling of ways.
It was Jen’s ex-husband, Shelly’s father, who arranged for the paternity test. Neither Ryan nor I knew this. It was Jen’s firm belief that the results we had been given were not accurate.
My pulse was racing as I became aware of the gravity of the situation. The actual test results were never shown to Ryan; he had only ever heard the conclusions from Shelly’s father. The reality hit me like a freight train: deep down, we had been deceived.
As more and more of the truth emerged, Shelly’s web of lies unraveled like a sweater’s thread in the days that followed. Shelly had been unknowingly pregnant while seeing other guys, it turned out. Shelly took advantage of our family’s financial stability by putting her faith in Ryan, my son, even though Ryan’s biological father was destitute.
