Several others had the tattoo, as I said before. At least enough to see a trend, I’m sure. Even though I didn’t know what it meant, I knew this mark had significance.
Based on my research (thanks, internet), I’ve learned that this particular red string tattoo is called the “red string of fate” in parts of Asia. This tattoo, which is most often seen on women’s pinky fingers and men’s thumbs, resembles a knotted shoelace in its simplicity.
It turns out that this little tattoo has deeper symbolic significance, one that stems from feelings of optimism and romanticism. It is said that the narrative originates from a Chinese folktale about a matchmaker who supposedly knows our soulmates.
