Is Onion Water the Secret to Hair Growth? Here’s What Science Says
In the quest for stronger strands, healthier scalps, and shiny finishes, many people turn to unconventional remedies. While you might have heard of apple cider vinegar rinses or beer treatments, onion water is gaining attention as a DIY solution for hair growth. But does this kitchen staple really live up to the hype? We consulted dermatologists to find out.
Benefits of Onion Water for Hair
Onion water is made by soaking sliced, raw onions in a jar of water, allowing their juices—rich in sulfur, flavonoids, and antioxidants—to infuse the liquid. This mixture is then applied directly to the scalp and hair.
Brendan Camp, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist, explains that onion water may improve hair strength by keeping the scalp and hair follicles healthy and protected from oxidative stress. Candace Spann, MD, FAAD, adds that the sulfates in onion water can soothe scalp dermatitis and itching, potentially encouraging hair growth.
While the evidence is still inconclusive regarding the effectiveness of onion water for significant hair growth, some studies suggest it may promote hair regrowth by increasing blood flow. A 2002 review found that nearly 87% of participants with alopecia areata experienced hair regrowth when applying onion juice twice daily. However, while quercetin, a flavonoid found in onions, is believed to stimulate blood flow, it does not affect hormones like DHT, so it may not be a miracle cure for pattern baldness.
Potential Side Effects of Using Onion Water
Whenever you try a DIY beauty remedy, there are risks to consider. Commercially formulated products have optimal ingredient concentrations and preservatives to inhibit bacterial growth. Nathan Newman, MD, FAAD, warns that DIY products can be highly concentrated, leading to potential adverse reactions, such as skin irritation, redness, itching, or rash on the scalp.
Another drawback is the strong odor associated with onion water. Frequent use might also lead to hair discoloration, particularly for those with light-colored hair, resulting in a temporary yellowish tint.
