And die-hard cupboard fans may want to look away now, because Heinz has officially come down hard in favor of the fridge.

“There was only ever one correct answer, and we’re happy to share with Heinz Tomato Ketchup lovers that our ketchup has to be in the fridge,”

Acknowledging that many people do keep their ketchup in the cupboard, Lennon explained:

“Although we’re aware many Heinz Tomato Ketchup fans have been storing their ketchup in the cupboard, we do recommend refrigeration after opening. This is the best way to maintain the delicious tangy taste of our Heinz Tomato Ketchup that you know and love.”

So, What’s the Rule?
Before opening:
Ketchup is shelf-stable and can stay in your cupboard.

After opening:
For best results and to maintain the classic flavor, it goes in the fridge.

This is why the label reads: “For Best Results, Refrigerate After Opening.”

Heinz’s stance isn’t exactly new. Back in 2023, the brand declared on X (formerly Twitter):

“FYI: Ketchup. goes. in. the. fridge!!!”
