Today, Luna, now a beautiful 4-year-old, is turning heads for a different reason — her radiant smile and the incredible results of her surgery.
Luna’s Birth and Rare Skin Condition
Luna Tavares-Fenner, from Florida, is a joyful and spirited 4-year-old who loves to laugh, play, and explore the world around her. However, Luna was born with a rare skin condition known as congenital melanocytic nevus, which caused a large, dark birthmark to cover most of her face, resembling a “Batman mask.”
Luna’s mother, Carol Fenner, was shocked when she first saw her newborn daughter’s face. “I’m used to it now, but then I was just shocked,” she told WPLG in 2019. Her last ultrasound before Luna’s birth had shown nothing abnormal, so the family was completely unprepared for the news.
Doctors were unsure what the mark was at first. After several tests, they determined that Luna’s birthmark could pose a significant risk of developing into skin cancer in the future. To mitigate this risk, they recommended multiple surgeries, which would not only be intensive but also extremely expensive.
