When I was a kid, it seemed like my parents valued my elder brother more than I did. Even if they were attempting to conceal it, I could see that they were treated differently. On several occasions, I felt like a forgotten detail, a vacant room aching for acknowledgement, while my brother took great pleasure in their approval.
Despite the disparity in our family dynamic, my grandpa stood firm as a rock of love and support. He was different from my parents in that he saw potential in me and encouraged me to pursue my dreams, including becoming a pilot.
At the age of fifteen, my grandpa passed away. Before he departed, he made one last promise to me, and it gave me hope. His promise to leave me his whole estate meant that I could finally go to college and follow my passions, as he assured me.
My parents kept onto this money until I turned eighteen. However, my pessimism supplanted it as time passed. Rather than address my concerns about my grandfather’s gift, my parents made vague promises and distracted me with other pursuits.
