Ingredients:
For the Chicken and Broth:
- 1 whole chicken (about 4 pounds), cut into parts
- 10 cups water
- 2 medium carrots, peeled and chopped
- 2 celery stalks, chopped
- 1 medium onion, peeled and halved
- 3 cloves garlic, smashed
- 2 bay leaves
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
For the Dumplings:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon sugar (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme (optional)
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small pieces
- 1 cup whole milk (or buttermilk for a tangy taste)
