Maybe you will wonder why this tradition started? Well, back in the old days before the invention of elastic bands, underwear had to be held in place by other means. Imagine using a bit of ribbon threaded through eyelet lace at the top to keep things from sliding down. Now, where would you tie that ribbon? Of course, in the front! It’s the most convenient spot to tie it securely.
Think about it – before the popularity of electricity, many folks had to start their day before the sun even rose. That meant getting dressed in the dark or by the soft glow of candlelight. And let’s be honest, trying to tie a ribbon behind your back accurately in low light? Not the easiest task. So, our clever ancestors decided to tie that ribbon right in the front, where they could actually see what they were doing.
Fast forward to today, and although elastic bands have taken the place of ribbons, that little bow has stuck around as a cute reminder of our dressing history. It’s a nod to the days of practicality and problem-solving when getting dressed was a bit more challenging.
