1. Activate the Yeast:
In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm milk with 1 tablespoon of sugar. Stir and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until the mixture becomes frothy.
2. Make the Dough:
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, remaining sugar, and salt. Add the egg, melted butter, and the frothy yeast mixture.
Stir until a dough forms. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and elastic.
3. Let the Dough Rise:
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
4. Shape the Donuts:
Once the dough has risen, punch it down and transfer it to a floured surface. Roll the dough out to about ½-inch thickness.
Use a donut cutter or two round cutters (one large for the donut shape, one small for the center hole) to cut out the donuts. Re-roll the scraps to cut out more donuts.
5. Fry the Donuts:
Heat about 2-3 inches of vegetable oil in a deep pan or pot over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). Fry the donuts a few at a time, making sure not to overcrowd the pan.
Fry each side for about 1-2 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove the donuts from the oil and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
6. Coat the Donuts:
While the donuts are still warm, roll them in granulated sugar until fully coated.
7. Serve:
Enjoy the donuts warm for the best texture and flavor!
