Life After Helen’s Death
Following Helen’s suicide, Geisel married Audrey Dimond just eight months later. Audrey herself had to go through a divorce to marry Geisel, which led to significant personal changes, including sending her daughters away to boarding school. The new marriage faced scrutiny and gossip, particularly because it followed so soon after Helen’s tragic death. However, Audrey became a key figure in Geisel’s life, helping manage both his personal affairs and his career. She also noted a shift in his writing, suggesting that he began writing more for “humanity” rather than just children.
The Later Years and Legacy
Dr. Seuss continued to write until his health began to fail in the late 1980s. He underwent treatments for a brain tumor and battled palate cancer, ultimately passing away in 1991 at the age of 87. His final words were a reflection of his lifelong drive to improve: “You can do better than this.” His ashes were scattered in the Pacific Ocean, and his legacy continued through Audrey’s stewardship of Dr. Seuss Enterprises.
