Early Life and Rise to Fame
Born Lilia Guadalupe Mendiola Mayares in 1952 in Acapulco, Mexico, Lyn May came from humble beginnings and has Chinese heritage. She learned early on that nothing in life came for free. As a child, she sold souvenirs to tourists to help support her family. As she grew older, she took a job as a waitress, where she met and fell in love with an American sailor 30 years her senior. The couple moved to Mexico City, had two daughters, and lived together for five years before she left him, citing abuse and exploitation of their children.
After her marriage ended, Lyn May returned to Acapulco and began working as a dancer. Her career took off when she started appearing on Siempre en Domingo, one of Latin America’s most popular TV shows, making her a household name. She caught the attention of Enrique Lombardini, who invited her to perform in his burlesque shows. Though initially hesitant, Lyn May embraced the provocative style, and her bold decision paid off, leading to her being dubbed “Lyn May: The Goddess of Love.” She became a prominent figure in the “Ficheras” films of the 1970s and 1980s, which focused on working-class life and humor in Mexico.
