Step 1: Make the Custard
Mix the custard powder with 1 cup of cold milk until completely smooth.
In a large saucepan, heat the remaining milk with sugar over medium heat until it begins to bubble.
Slowly add the custard mix while stirring constantly.
Continue stirring until the mixture thickens into a creamy pudding.
Stir in vanilla extract and butter, remove from heat, and let cool slightly.
Step 2: Layer the Wafer Dessert
In a large deep glass dish (minimum 13×9 inches), pour a thin layer of custard at the bottom.
Place a layer of wafers to cover the custard. Break pieces to fit edges if needed.
Repeat layering: custard → wafers → custard → wafers until all wafers and custard are used, ending with a custard layer on top.
Smooth the top with a spatula and refrigerate while making the ganache.
Step 3: Prepare Chocolate Ganache
Heat cream in a saucepan until just before boiling.
Pour over chopped chocolate in a bowl. Let sit for 2 minutes.
Stir until smooth. Add butter and coffee if using.
Let it cool slightly, then pour over the final custard layer.
Step 4: Decoration (Optional)
Pipe thin horizontal lines of melted white chocolate across the ganache.
Drag a toothpick vertically in alternating directions to create a web pattern.
