How to protect yourself effectively?
Fortunately, there are solutions to limit the impact of these intrusive calls:
- Never call back an unknown number that immediately hangs up. This confirms to scammers that your line is active.
- Use call filtering apps, such as those built into smartphones or specialized apps (Hiya, Truecaller).
- Enable unknown call filtering on your phone, an option available on some models.
- Register on lists to prevent canvassing (such as Bloctel in France), even if this does not provide 100% protection against scams.
- Never give out personal information over the phone, especially if the call seems suspicious.
A constantly evolving threat
Robocalls started as a marketing tool, but were quickly hijacked by scammers. They are constantly evolving to circumvent laws and protections in place. Many countries are tightening laws against these practices, but scammers are still finding ways to get around them.
In this context, vigilance remains the best protection. An innocuous call can hide an attempt at fraud. Adopting the right reflexes allows you to limit the risks and maintain control over your private life.
