Why is a metal terminal necessary?
To ensure your safety, it has three main functions:
Protection against electric shock
If the appliance has a fault (for example, an exposed wire touching the metal casing), the metal clip allows the current to flow to ground rather than through your body when you touch it.
Preventing Short Circuits and Fires
Grounding fault can cause overheating, equipment damage or even fire.
Reduction of electrical interference
It helps to stabilize the electric current, in particular the parasites which can interfere with the proper functioning of sensitive devices (computers, televisions, etc.).
Legal obligation for modern installations
Earthing is a requirement imposed by electrical regulations. In France, the NF C 15-100 standard stipulates that all homes must be equipped with an earthing system for maximum safety.
