Assassin bugs, also called “kissing bugs,” are insects that feed on blood. Their bite can spread parasites that cause Chagas disease, a serious illness that can harm the heart and other organs. Although insect bites are not common, it is important to be able to recognize the insect, take steps to avoid bites, and respond promptly if one occurs.
What are assassin bugs?
Look: Assassin bugs are usually dark brown or black with orange or red spots.
Where they live: They can be found all over the United States, mainly in the southern region. They usually hide in gardens, under porches, or even indoors.
Behavior: These bugs suck blood from people and animals, usually biting uncovered skin and leaving waste at the bite spot.
Dangers of Being Bitten
Chagas Disease: The bugs’ poop parasites can give you Chagas disease if they get into your body through a bite or by touching sensitive areas like your eyes or mouth.
