Researchers concluded that between 40% and 63% of sudden cardiac arrest cases could be prevented by addressing these factors. Specifically, moderate consumption of white wine or Champagne and regular fruit intake appeared to be protective. In contrast, feelings of hopelessness, high BMI, increased arm fat mass, high blood pressure, and lower educational attainment were linked to increased risk.
Lead investigator Dr. Huihuan Luo, from Fudan University in Shanghai, China, stated:
“The study found significant associations between various modifiable factors and sudden cardiac arrest, with lifestyle changes being the most impactful in preventing cases.”
In an accompanying editorial, Nicholas Grubic (University of Toronto) and Dakota Gustafson (Queen’s University, Ontario) noted:
“One of the study’s most intriguing findings is the cardioprotective effect associated with Champagne and white wine consumption, questioning long-held assumptions about the specificity of red wine’s heart benefits. While the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood, these results suggest that the benefits of moderate alcohol consumption may be more complex than previously believed.”
Sudden cardiac arrest is usually caused by a severe arrhythmia – a malfunction in the heart’s electrical system. Witnesses are urged to call emergency services immediately, begin CPR, and use a defibrillator if one is available nearby.
