“Go ahead,” the woman replied.
Kaylee rushed outside, her hands shaking as she read the address. It was in the town where Amanda’s biological mother lived, a place Amanda had always been curious about but had never visited. The pieces were falling into place. Amanda must have decided to seek out her biological mother.
Kaylee didn’t hesitate. She got into her car and drove three hours to the address on the note. When she arrived, an older woman opened the door. She looked surprised but not entirely caught off guard when Kaylee showed her the photo.
“Yes, she was here,” the woman said softly. “She came looking for answers. I tried to help, but she left. She didn’t say where she was going.”
Kaylee felt a wave of defeat. She thanked the woman and drove to the local police station, her mind racing with worry. Just as she was about to walk in, she noticed a figure sitting on the porch of an abandoned house across the street. A girl, hunched over, with her head in her hands. Kaylee’s breath caught in her throat. She knew that silhouette anywhere.
“Amanda!” she shouted, running across the street.
