Aging is a natural and beautiful journey, but it often brings along skin changes like age spots that can affect our confidence. Understanding these spots and how to manage them can help you maintain healthy, vibrant skin as you age.
Age Spots
Age spots, also known as liver spots or sun spots, are flat, darkened areas on the skin that typically appear on sun-exposed regions such as the face, hands, shoulders, and arms. They vary in size and are common in adults over 50, though younger individuals with significant sun exposure can also develop them.
The primary cause of age spots is prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light, which accelerates melanin production—the pigment responsible for skin color. Over time, this leads to the development of these darkened areas. Both natural sunlight and artificial sources like tanning beds contribute to this effect.
Age spots are characterized by their flat, oval shape and increased pigmentation, ranging from tan to dark brown. They can vary in size and may group, becoming more prominent. While harmless, it’s essential to differentiate them from potentially cancerous growths. Very dark spots that have changed in appearance or exhibit unusual characteristics should be evaluated by a dermatologist.
