Innovative Gardening: Growing Onions and Garlic with a Bucket and
PVC Pipe System
Gardening can be a fulfilling and sustainable way to enjoy fresh vegetables right at home. Onions and garlic are versatile kitchen staples known for their flavor and health benefits. With the right approach, you can easily cultivate these aromatic
bulbs in a small space, making them an excellent addition to any home garden. In this article, we will explore a unique method of growing onions and garlic in a bucket using a PVC pipe system. This innovative technique maximizes your harvest in a compact area, making it perfect for urban and small-space gardening.
Materials You’ll Need:
A large, sturdy bucket (at least 5 gallons)
Approximately 100 small onion bulbs (sets)
PVC pipe (1-2 inches in diameter) with an end cap
A drill with a 1-inch hole saw attachment
Compost or potting mix
Garlic cloves
Watering can or hose
Step-by-Step Guide:
1. Prepare the Bucket
Start by selecting a large, food-grade bucket. Clean the bucket thoroughly to remove any residues. If the bucket doesn’t have drainage holes, drill several in the bottom to prevent waterlogging.
2. Drill Holes in the Bucket
Using the 1-inch hole saw attachment, drill holes around the sides of the bucket, spacing them about 1 inch apart. Make sure there are enough holes for all your onion sets, as these will serve as planting spots for the bulbs.
3. Insert the PVC Pipe
In the center of the bucket, drill a hole large enough to fit the PVC pipe snugly. Insert the pipe through this hole, ensuring it is stable and secure. Attach an end cap to the top of the pipe to prevent soil from entering.
4. Plant the Onion Sets
Gently insert one onion set into each hole around the sides of the bucket, pushing them down until they are snug but not buried too deeply. The 1-inch spacing will provide ample room for each onion to grow.
5. Fill the Bucket with Compost
Add compost or potting mix to the bucket, filling it until it completely covers the onion bulbs. Ensure the tops of the onions are just barely exposed above the soil
6. Plant Garlic on Top
