Introduction
Over time, mattresses can accumulate dirt, bacteria, mould spores, and unpleasant odours, especially in humid environments. Regular vacuuming helps, but to truly freshen your mattress and maintain a healthy sleep space, a deeper clean is essential. Fortunately, you don’t need harsh chemicals to do the job. This simple, all-natural DIY recipe will not only clean your mattress but also leave it smelling fresh and sanitized.
Ingredients
1 cup baking soda
10 drops tea tree essential oil (natural antifungal and antibacterial)
10 drops lavender essential oil (for a soothing scent and antibacterial properties)
1/4 cup cornstarch (optional, for moisture absorption)
Fine mesh sieve or strainer
Vacuum with an upholstery attachment
Instructions
Prepare the Cleaning Mix:
In a small mixing bowl, combine the baking soda, cornstarch (if using), and essential oils. Mix thoroughly to distribute the oils evenly throughout the powder.
Apply to Mattress:
Using the mesh sieve or strainer, evenly sprinkle the mixture over the entire surface of your mattress. Make sure to cover all corners, especially if it hasn’t been cleaned in a while.
Let It Sit:
Allow the mixture to sit on the mattress for at least 1 hour. For best results, leave it for 3–4 hours or even overnight. This gives the ingredients time to absorb moisture, neutralize odours, and fight bacteria and mould.
Vacuum Thoroughly:
After the sitting period, vacuum the entire mattress using the upholstery attachment. Go over it slowly to ensure all powder is removed.
